HOST A MEETING

ChiPy is always grateful to our meeting hosts! ChiPy is on the lookout for organizations willing to host our Main monthly meeting, as well as our smaller Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings, and our other Events.

If you have an interest in hosting the Main Monthly ChiPy meeting, here is some information about how our meetings run and what we typically look for in a host:

  • ChiPy Main Meetings run from 6pm to 9pm on the second Thursday of each month. The first half hour is dedicated to socializing, setup, and food. Talks start at 6:30pm. Food is typically served between 6 and 6:30.

  • ChiPy Main Meetings typically consist of 2-4 talks, anywhere between 5 and 35 minutes in length. Talks are focused around a wide range of Python-based topics, with a particular focus on Open Source technology and how Python is used creatively in business and in our personal lives. On occasion, we will hold themed meetings with a more specific focus.

  • The main meeting draws about 100-150 people. We'd be looking for spaces and seating that can accommodate that many attendees.

  • Often times, the sponsoring venue will provide food and drinks. Any assistance here is much appreciated!

  • Our presenters require some sort of projector/AV system to tap into. It is also very helpful to have a microphone and audio system, so our presenters are easily heard. Please let us know if you do NOT have an AV system available (projector/TV/speaker system), so we can make accommodations.

  • When available, we like to record our talks and post them to our YouTube channel. In these situations, we will bring our own recording equipment. If your venue is not comfortable with us recording the presenters at the meeting, please let us know and we can accomodate.

If you have an interest in hosting a Special Interest Group Meeting, here is some information about those:

  • ChiPy SIG meetings run on different schedules. See meetup.com or contact a ChiPy organizer (see below) for upcoming meetings.

  • Typically SIG meeting attendance ranges from 30-50 people. They often start at 6pm or 7pm on weeknights, and sometimes weekends. See meetup.com for upcoming meetings.

Benefits to your hosting organization/venue!

  • As a representative of a venue, you will have 5 minutes during the meeting to share your excitement about your organization to a group of Python enthusiasts.

  • Venues will be highlighted on the Meetup event page and ChiPy homepage prior to the meeting, and in the mailing list announcement. It's a great way for your organization to get wide exposure into the Python community! Our announcements reach thousands of Python enthusiasts on our mailing list and we have over 5000 members on our meetup.com organization.

  • You will have the opportunity to show off your awesome space! Some hosts give tours before or after the meeting, or have a welcome table with information about their organization. Totally up to you!

We would love for you to host a meeting! Please contact us on our organizers mailing list chicago-organizers@python.org, via our contact form https://www.chipy.org/contact/, or by directly reaching out to one of our organizers. We would be happy to provide more information about how you might help.
